China: A Report From the Top

Anthony Lake is the National Security Adviser to President Bill Clinton. In July, he sat down at the White House with Los Angeles Times correspondents Jim Mann and Doyle McManus to review his recent rip to Beijing where he met with Chinese President Ziang Jemin and Premier Li Peng, among others. President Jemin will be invited for a state visit to Washington next year if Clinton wins reelection. This is an edited excerpt of that interview.
