The Circle of Rivers
Gaber Asfour is the Secretary General of Egypt's Supreme Council of Culture.
Widely regarded as one of Egypt's most prominent thinkers, his mission as
head of the SCC is to guide and support modern Egyptian culture through
the creation of writer's groups, the staging of plays and operas, and the
publishing of books. In the following comments adapted from an interview
with NPQ Associate Editor Leila Conners in Cairo, Asfour described the Egyptian
cultural context at the end of the 20th century.
Cairo - Egypt is at an important juncture in its
long and rich intellectual tradition. Against fundamentalist pressures
throughout the region, we are trying to preserve the innate openness of
Egyptian society as we prepare to enter the next century.
