Japan Must Shed Its Export Dependence

Tsutomu Hata, formerly Japan's finance minister (1991-92) and foreign minister (1993-94), was prime minister of Japan for two months in the Spring 1994. He precipitated the fall of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party in 1992 when he dramatically led his powerful faction out of the ruling party to found the reformist Shinseito. He recently spoke with NPQ about the state of Japan's economy and political life. His comments are adapted in this article.
