Famine and Nukes in North Korea
At the end of the road, North Korea's ideology of self-reliance has led
to famine. Will this desperation lead its isolated leaders to lash out and
"scorch" their enemies in South Korea and Japan with nukes, as
a top defector has said they ill?
Or, will North Korea be able to stick it out, as a member
of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences told NPQ in May, because "this
whole century has been similar hardship and the North Koreans are used
to it?
One of America's top non-proliferation experts, Joe Nye,
and the head of the United Nations World Food Program, Catherine Bertini,
assess the situation.
