America's Cultural Influence is Waning
Federico Mayor, the director general of UNESCO, met with NPQ editor Nathan
Gardels in Paris in late September. The following remarks are adapted from
that conversation.
Paris - I fully endorse the new global network
of culture ministers put together by the Canadian Minister of Cultural
Heritage, Sheila Copps. At last, there is a mechanism to do what we have
been talking about for so many years: safeguarding cultural diversity
against the threat of the globalized uniformity, monoculture and the dominance
of the English language. This is essential because what is at stake is
not the past, not monuments, but living culture and creativity.
