Banning The Bomb: A Good Idea for Latin America?

Raul Alfonsin was the President of Argentina from 1983 to 1989 and remains, as head of the Radical Party, the main opposition leader to President Carlos Saul Menem.

Buenos Aires - In view of the senseless nuclear arms race unleashed by the recent nuclear tests in India and Pakistan, the states of Latin America - all of whom, except Cuba, have signed the Tlatelolco Treat that makes the region a nuclear-free zone - are being looked upon as examples of the disarmament alternative. This is particularly true of Argentina, lauded as a paradigmatic case of reason prevailing over the pursuit of military status.
