London - Tony Blair has welcomed Gerhard Schroeder's victory as the beginning of a new era in Europe. The prime minister is right in thinking that the German election result marks a fundamental shift in European politics. But the movement that is underway in Germany and other European countries is not in the direction of the Blairite "radical center."
