The Virtual Continent

Kenichi Ohmae, a regular contributor over the years to NPQ, is one of Japan's most provocative thinkers. After heading the Tokyo office of McKinsey & Company for many years, Ohmae ran unsuccessfully for governor of the Tokyo region and now runs his own consulting firm. The following is excerpted from his forthcoming book, The Invisible Continent.

American political and corporate leaders, who had once regarded Japanese corporations as unstoppable juggernauts, now presumptuously lectured their Tokyo counterparts about the need to "recover your bearings."
