China: From Democracy Wall to the Shopping Mall

Wei Jingsheng, China's most famous political prisoner, was expelled from China to the United States last November and remains living in exile in New York. He recently spoke with NPQ Editor Nathan Gardels about President Clinton's trip to China in June and the evolution of the democracy movement.

Wei was first arrested in 1979 for placing a poster on Democracy Wall in Bejing calling for the "fifth modernization" - the of democracy - to complete Deng Xiaoping's four modernizations in agriculture, science, industry and the military.
